It’s that time of year again! Oh yeah, you know the one where the only thing you can think of is jumping into the pool or sucking down your favorite flavor snowball. Between the all of the fun and sun here in New Orleans, sometimes we forget to reapply sunscreen. For those of us fair skinned folks it’s almost inevitable to avoid the burn regardless of what we do. The heat is on and we all know prevention is key, but should we get stuck feeling the burn, here are a few home remedies to treat sunburns.

Sunburn Home Remedy #1: Hydrate and Moisturize
Let’s start with the obvious and most logical treatments for sunburn. Thinking logically, your dehydrated, with dry skin, what’s the first thing you do? Drink plenty of water and lotion up.
I would definitely recommend lotions containing Vitamin E, Aloe Vera, or soy. Also try oiling your skin first, then using moisturizer These creams will soothe the burn and lessen inflammation.
Sunburn Home Remedy #2: Soaks and Oils
Taking a nice cool bath is always a great recommendation for sunburn. There are a number of things you can soak in to ease the pain and lessen inflammation:
- Apple cider vinegar- pour 1-2 cups in bath.
- White vinegar- pour 1-2 cups in bath.
- Milk bath- pour 4 cups in bath.
- Oatmeal bath- follow package or personal instructions.
- Lavender Essential Oil- add 4-10 drops to bath water.
Sunburn Home Remedy #3: Pastes
Oddly enough, most home remedies come in the form of a paste. Many vegetables and household items possess healing properties useful for a number of things. One of them being sunburn. Here are some pasty treats to cool you down:
- Potatoes- peel, slice, blend, apply to affected area.
- Cornstarch- mix with water, apply to affected area.
- Cucumber- chill, mash, apply to affected area.
- Yogurt- apply to affected area.
Sunburn Home Remedy #4: Compresses
Compresses are great for relief! I like compresses because they are portable, which in my life is a definite must. They also tend to be less messy than pastes, yet some claim they’re not as effective in the long run.
- Cold Compress- soak rag in ice water of add ice inside rag hold on affected area
- Milk- soak desired item (washcloth, gauze pads, cotton balls, etc.) in milk, apply to affected area.
- Cornstarch- mix with water until it forms a paste, apply to affected area.
- Witch Hazel- soak a non-stick gauze in witch hazel and apply to affected area.
- Tea- boil black tea, let cool, you can choose to add mint for a more cooling effect, soak a wash cloth in the tea then apply to the affected area.
After the cooling effects of these have worn off, you can go ahead and rinse them off with cool water.
Over the Counter Remedies For Sunburns
- Aspirin, Ibuprofen or acetaminophen will help with pain and inflammation, as well as any other NSAIDs.
- Try hydrocortisone cream for itching, pain or swelling.
- Aquaphor, Eucerin, or Aloe Vera are all topical OTC gels and creams for moisturizing burn.
- If the burn is bad enough you may need a visit to Rapid Urgent Care for treatment.
Things to Avoid When Treating Sunburns:
These things will worsen or accelerate sunburn, as a result increasing pain. Be sure steer clear from these.
- petroleum jelly
- more sun
- tight fitting clothes
- certain medications, both OTC and prescription
