31 FUN Things To Do In New Orleans In January

It’s January, which means a NEW YEAR (Hello 2018!) and around here it marks the start of Carnival Season! January is also packed with fun events for the whole family. Here are 31 FUN Things to do in New Orleans In January.

NOTE: the number corresponds with the day of the month and * denotes free admission/event. 

  1. Relax and eat some black eyed peas and cabbage after ringing in the New Year.
  2. Spend the last days of Winter Breaks having some indoor fun since it’s cold outside.
  3. Every Wednesday from 2-3pm babies and their caregivers can  learn to sign and sing a new song, share storytime with friends, and enjoy open play at ZukaBaby in Metairie during Baby Sign and Play. *
  4. Make a cool LEGO creation and have it showcased at Lakeshore Library during Lego Club from 6:30-7:30pm. For ages 4 and up. *
  5. Johnette Downing hosts a FREE family friendly concert in the French Market from 11-11:45 am. *
  6. Kick off the city’s tricentennial celebration and the Carnival season with fireworks along the river at 9 pm. *
  7.  Have some interactive drumming fun at the East Jefferson YMCA during the Dancing Drum Workshop at 10am. Open to the first 15 kids between the ages of 5-18 who register. Children must have a chaperone.  To register contact Amy at 504-568-9622 or email her at amys@ymcaneworleans.org.*
  8. Kids can make sloppy joes and mini king cakes in the January Cooking Class with Chef Sally at the Rouses on Tchoupitoulas  from 5-6:30 pm. Other classes are offered throughout the month at different Rouses locations.
  9. Create a pumpkin patch picture at the Jefferson Parish West Bank Regional Library’s Craft Night from 5:30-6:30pm.*
  10. Learn about Infant Nutrition with Nurse Nikki at ZukaBaby in Metairie from 10-11 am. The event is free but a $5-10 donation is suggested.
  11. Children ages 3-6 can participate in different learning activities during Sing and Read at the Jefferson Parish West Bank Regional Library from 10:30-11:15 am. This week’s book is Froggy Gets Dressed and Livy Leap Frog. The craft is a shape collage.  *
  12. Go explore the Music Box Village and play in a musical town from 3-7pm. Admission is free for Louisiana residents. *
  13. Join us at the  2018 Family Wellness Expo, hosted in partnership with the Esplanade Mall and sponsored by Rapid Urgent Care from 10 am – 2 pm in the the Esplanade Mall center court. The event will feature vendor tables, fitness demonstrations, and free screenings, as well as a DJ, bounce house, and characters to entertain children.*
  14. Victory Fellowship Church is offering STEM Studio For Kids ages 5-11 at 7pm. Each week we will study creation and laws rule the universe by conducting an experiment. *
  15. The Ogden Museum of Southern Art is having a day full of special activities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King from 10 am – 5pm. *
  16. Reading with Rover at the Jefferson Parish East Bank Library from 6:30-7:30 pm. *
  17. NOMA is free to Louisiana residents on Wednesday. *
  18. Infant and Child CPR Classes with Nurse Nikki at ZukaBaby in Metairie from 5-6 pm, $20 per person.
  19. Teens can play Xbox games during Teen Game Zone at the Jefferson Parish Belle Terre Library from 3:30-4:30 pm. *
  20. The Driftwood Neighborhood in Kenner hosts their annual neighborhood parade. The Driftwood Parade runs through the neighborhood and starts at 1pm. *
  21. Learn about healthy lifestyles at the Community Health Festival at Torah Academy (5210 West Esplanade Ave., Metairie) from 3-5pm. *
  22. Go on one of these stroller friendly outings today.
  23. Children ages 3-5 can play through a variety of Learning Centers at the Jefferson Parish Eastbank Regional Library from 6:30-7:30pm. *
  24. Take some time to explore a local national park.
  25. Ogden Museum of Southern Art admission is free for Louisiana Residents on Thursdays. *
  26. The 2nd Annual River Bend BBQ Festival will be held at Lafreniere Park from 4-10pm. BBQ contest, live music and more.
  27. Visit the Audubon Nature Center *
  28. The Krewe of Little Rascals, Jefferson Parish’s children’s Mardi Gras Krewe rolls down Veterans Memorial Blvd at noon. *
  29. Meet the Budweiser Clydesdales and support the NOPD mounted division at the annual Horses, Hops and Cops Fundraiser at the NOPD Mounted Division Stables from 5-8 pm. *
  30.  Children ages 2-6 can participate in a yoga class at the Jefferson Parish Westbank Regional Library from 11-11:30 am during Yoga with Michelle. *
  31. New Orleans City Park Botanical Gardens are free for Louisiana residents on Wednesday, so go enjoy! *
